Forest climate standard 2021/2022/ 2023
The first eva standard, the Forest Climate Standard, went into public consultation as a draft in version 1.0. This standard forms the basis for various methods that follow eva's accreditation guidelines, in particular the forest restoration and forest conversion method.
From 26 June to 24 July 2023 , the Forest Climate Standard was open to the interested public and committed organizations for feedback, during which time the Forest Climate Standard could be viewed and feedback could be submitted.

Version 0.3 of the Forest Climate Standard went out for public consultation.
From 1 August to 31 August 2022 , the Forest Climate Standard, including the forest restoration method, was open to feedback from interested members of the public and committed organizations, during which time the Forest Climate Standard was accessible and feedback could be submitted.

Brief description C-property

Can ecosystem services such as the carbon sink of a forest be marketed? And if so - by whom? How can environmental advertising with reference to the use of climate certificates be structured? The legal opinion of the law firm Redeker provides us with answers based on the legal system applicable in Germany.

Brief description Principles

Principles are the basis of any quality standard. In order to determine what the principles for a forest climate standard in Germany should look like, international studies by McKinsey, WWF, the Öko-Institut, ICROA and four international and national climate standards were compared with each other.

Based on this analysis, a first draft of the principles of the forest climate standard to be developed for Germany was derived.

Forest restoration method 2021/2022/ 2023

Thank you very much for your feedback.

The forest restoration method has been in public consultation several times, parallel to the forest climate standard:

  • from September 30, 2021 - October 31, 2021
  • from August 01, 2022 - August 31, 2022
  • from June 26, 2023 - July 24, 2023

You can find more information on the two public consultations in the archive under Forest Climate Standard. All feedback and requests for clarification can be found in the Feedback documentation.

Forest conversion method (Pina Earth) 2023 /2024

Thank you very much for your feedback.

The '02 forest conversion method (Pina Earth) was in public consultation for feedback from September 30 - October 31, 2024. All feedback is published anonymously in the feedback documentation.

Second public consultation of the method
'02 Forest conversion'

The '02 Forest Restructuring' method from Pina Earth is entering its second public consultation. Based on the experience from the pilot phase, new adjustments were made to the requirements. The aim is for the Technical Committee to recommend accreditation.

The method aims to increase the climate resilience of commercial forests. The aim of forest conversion is to create multi-layered forests with different tree species and age classes. This is intended to promote the natural dynamics of the forest, as well as biodiversity and adaptability to climate change.

As part of eva's multi-stakeholder dialog, Pina Earth and eva invite you to the second Public Consultation.

The public consultation will take place from September 30 to October 31, 2024. During this period, the method will be open to feedback from interested members of the public and all stakeholder groups involved.

Your feedback counts until
October 31, 2024

Note: The methods will only be accredited after further in-depth consultations with the IPCC, the Technical Committee and the public. The German Council on Forest and Climate Change and the Technical Committee of the eva foundation are neither responsible for the content of the method nor for the development of the method, but serve as a sounding board and advisory body.

Basics for public consultation

The experiences and adjustments in the '02 Forest conversion' method are presented in the presentation and in the explanatory video. The changes can be found in the track changes of the standard (list of adjustments).

The current status of the method can be viewed in the current version of the Forest Climate Standard.

Development process

The '02 Forest Restructuring' method went into the first public consultation as a draft in winter 2023 and was approved for the pilot phase in fall 2023 after a technical review. The method is currently in the pilot phase and has not yet been accredited.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

The Forest conversion method (Pina Earth) version 0.1 was in public consultation for feedback from March 01 - 31, 2023. All feedback is anonymized in the Feedback documentation published.

Method: Forest conversion

The scope of the forest climate standard will be extended: after developing a method for reforestation, we work together to with the Wald-Klimarat and Pina Earth to develop a method for forest conversion. In order to ensure that all perspectives on the calculation bases of the Forest conversion method Pina Earth and eva have decided to take the first Public Consultation invited.

The public consultation took place from March 1 to 31, 2023. During this period, the method was open to the interested public and all participating stakeholder groups for feedback.

Your feedback counted until March 31

The listed method papers, webinars and presentations of the forest restructuring method served as abasis.

Method: Forest conversion - Part 1 (Basics)

The forest conversion project type is presented and the Pina Earth method design is explained in detail.

The forest conversion method is described in the following documents and explains the the most important questions and functions:

  • How is the method structured?
  • For which scope and area of application is the method designed?
  • How does the quantification process work?

Method: Forest conversion - Part 2 (GHG balancing)

The methodology paper and webinar with accompanying presentation describe the GHG accounting and quantification process in detail.

It guides you through the entire process that a project goes through:

  • Processing of input data to create the digital forest twin of the initial stand on the project area
  • Setting the parameters used to simulate the baseline and project scenario
  • Sequence of calculation steps in the simulation: mortality, growth & natural regeneration and utilization & maintenance
  • Calculation of the climate impact

Development process of the method

Following the public consultation, your comments will be reviewed and the method further developed on this basis. method will be further developed and submitted to the Forest-Climate Council and the Technical Committee presented. In the fall of 2023, the forest conversion method entered the pilot phase.

Climate-optimized forestry operations management (OCELL) 2024 method

Thank you very much for your feedback.

The '03 climate-optimized forest management method was in public consultation from 30 September. - October 31, 2024 for feedback in public consultation. All feedback is published anonymously in the feedback documentation.

First public consultation of the method
'03 Climate-optimized forest management'

The scope of application of the forest climate standard is extended: OCELL enters the first public consultation with its first draft of the method '03 Climate-optimized forest management'. This is the first time it has been presented in written form to the Technical Committee and the Forest Climate Council. The aim is to develop a pilot version of the method based on the feedback from the public consultation and the subsequent deliberations of the eva foundation's bodies.

The method aims to increase, maintain and stabilize carbon stocks. By adapting forestry operations planning to the effects of climate change and reducing the use of wood, the aim is to increase or maintain carbon storage at the level of forestry operations. Particular attention is to be paid to forest risk management and the future stability of forests.

As part of eva's multi-stakeholder dialog, OCELL and eva invite you to the first Public Consultation.

The method of climate-optimized forest management is presented and the OCELL method design is explained in detail.

The method documents should clarify the following questions:

  • How is the method structured?
  • For which scope and area of application is the method designed?
  • How additionality is addressed
  • How is the climate performance calculated?
